Ariel Parkinson was an artist, writer, and theatrical stage and costume designer. In the 1940's Parkinson was a student at the University of California, Berkeley, when she joined a poetry circle that included members of the San Francisco Renaissance such as Robert Duncan and Kenneth Rexroth, and later the Beats. After studying art in Italy she returned to Berkeley where she married professor Thomas Parkinson who was also a poet and a Yeats scholar.
